We speak of angelic hierarchies because there are differences of degree or level among them. Angels are the closest to human beings, and are much superior to them, although they are much lower on the hierarchical ladder than the cherubim and the seraphim. The cherubim and seraphim are so exalted that they are not even aware of the existence of the inhabitants of the earth, and are never given the task of watching over them; they take care of the solar systems and the galaxies, and it is exceedingly rare for one of them to come and meet us. A seraph moves through space at the speed of lightning. If you are there, alert, ready to grasp something of its celestial radiations, you will have such a dazzling, illuminating experience that the effects will be with you for the rest of your life. But you will not stop the seraph, who will continue its journey through infinite space.
