Water - it has powers of absorption and transmission
Because of its great powers of absorption and transmission, water has always had a role to play in magic rites. There are many tales of sorcerers who turned a human being into an animal – a bird, a dog or a horse for instance – after reciting a magic formula over a bowl of water, and sprinkling the water on the victim. However, the properties of water can also be used for a good purpose. This is why, for example, priests use water to bless the faithful. Since water has the power to retain the currents and influences it receives, it can be a vehicle for the words of blessing.*
