Protection of heaven - how to obtain it

Imagine someone saying a little prayer on their doorstep as they leave to go on holiday: 'Lord, protect my house from thieves.' Would you believe it! The Lord has to look after this person's house, while they go off walking and enjoying themselves! And if, when they return, they find their house has been burgled, they'll be furious with the Lord, of course, for not having done his work properly. Did they really believe that the Lord, poor thing, would bother looking after a house while they went on holiday? But who do people think the Lord is? So, you should not be surprised if, from time to time, the spirits above decide to teach a lesson to heedless folk who think the Lord is their caretaker: the spirits push a few scoundrels into going and burgling them. You'll say, 'So, then, it's forbidden to ask the Lord to protect your house?' No, but first of all, don't imagine he'll be the one doing it; you should be more humble, and ask him to send one of his servants. Then, you should promise something yourself: promise to keep some rule to do with wisdom, honesty or kindness. This is how you create the conditions for your prayers to be answered. You must always give something in exchange for what you request.
