Love - how men and women should speak to each other

No one woman can give a man everything he needs, nor can one man give a woman everything. A man should explain to his beloved: ‘My darling, you must understand that it is not I who can bring you happiness. Even if I were to give you all I have, your heart is so huge that the whole universe could not fill it, and your mind needs a light that I do not possess. God alone can give you everything. Nothing could make me happier than for you to use me simply as a means to move closer to God. I will stay by your side, but it is God whom you must seek through me.’ This is how men and women should speak to each other, instead of continually making false promises. Even if you cannot yet live these higher forms of love, you need to know that they exist and that you must strive towards them if you wish to be truly happy in your love. For when you love in this way, love will never leave you; it will remain in your heart and become a state of consciousness that nothing can perturb. And to experience love as a state of consciousness is to feel in oneself a constant warmth, a light that is never extinguished.*
