‘In the beginning was the Word’ - how this applies to everyday life

‘In the beginning was the Word.’ If people knew how the first words from the Gospel of St John could be applied in their lives, they would overcome many difficulties and avoid a great deal of suffering. You will say, ‘But how? This phrase is so abstract, so difficult to understand. How can we apply it?’ Well, it is precisely because you do not try to apply it that it remains abstract and difficult to understand. ‘So what should we do?’ Simply allow the Word to accompany all your actions. Let’s take some very simple cases from everyday life. When you are cleaning windows, for example, instead of allowing your thoughts to wander here, there and everywhere as you carry out your task, be conscious of your gestures, and say, ‘As I clean this window, may my heart be washed clean and become transparent.’ And do the same when you are sweeping, or doing the washing-up or dusting. Of course, it is not necessary to say all of this aloud, especially if someone might hear you. The important thing is to be aware, in other words to apply your thought – which necessarily implies words – to everything you do, so that you become creative.
