Work - the good and the bad side of an occupation

Every activity has a good and a bad side. If you observe yourself, you will notice that whatever your occupation, after a few years, you have spent your strength, your health and your beauty. Of course, there were a few small advantages, but if you were to put them all on the divine scales, you would see that the little you have gained does not compensate for the wealth you have lost. Unfortunately, this is not the type of calculation human beings are accustomed to making. When they want to obtain money, fame or science, they never place the losses these acquisitions will entail on the other side of the scale. Perhaps they will get what they want, but a few years later, we find them in clinics or psychiatric wards unable to eat, drink or take pleasure in life – their nervous system is in tatters. It is then that they realize the value of what they have lost and say, ‘If only I had known!’ But it is too late, they should have known much sooner!
