Spiritual Master, a - gives only methods

Some people seek a spiritual Master because they believe that by living close to someone who has achieved great elevation, they will be favoured: not only will they be protected when they are with him, but merely through his presence they will receive his knowledge and powers. But this is not true. A spiritual Master teaches truths and gives methods, but it is up to the disciples to apply them, and to work for their own freedom and salvation. They will only progress through the efforts they themselves make. The Creator desires one thing only: for human beings to improve themselves. And they must work in order to better themselves. A spiritual Master sets an example for his disciples, he opens up the path for them and tells them how to walk, but he cannot walk for them – the disciples must walk for themselves. Even if a Master is able to do so, he will not carry a disciple on his shoulders, for this will teach them nothing and they will remain weak. And if he does happen to intervene in a disciple's life, it is to provide particular help and because he knows that his disciple will then be able to walk alone.
