Sagittarius symbolizes the triumph of reason over the forces of instinct - Sagittarius symbolizes someone in whom reason has triumphed over the dark instinctive forces
Sagittarius symbolizes someone in whom reason has triumphed over the dark instinctive forces. This idea is also expressed by the mythological figure of the Centaur, which has the upper body of a man mounted on the lower body of a horse. Human beings are made up of two natures: lower and higher. They cannot rid themselves of their lower nature, but must learn to control it so as to put it to work. What is more, illustrations of the Centaur or Sagittarius show the horse’s body in motion, galloping. But this motion is not without purpose or direction, it serves a well-considered action, expressed by the bow held by the Centaur who is ready to shoot an arrow. You know what mastery it takes to draw a bow and aim true. So Sagittarius represents someone who places the movements of their lower nature – represented by the galloping horse – at the service of an ideal, symbolized by the arrow that flies precisely to its mark.
