Religious sentiment - is inscribed in the structure of the human being

Any attempt to attack religion in the name of objectivity, of science or of reason is an enterprise doomed to failure, because we can no more suppress religious feeling than we can suppress other feelings. This is a domain in which reason by itself has no place. The sense of the sacred, the need human beings feel to be connected to a higher world, to the divine world in which they have their origin, is inscribed in their very structure. We may try to deny it, to fight it, or to pull it out by the roots, and for a time we may even succeed. But this success will not last and, sooner or later, we will also have to recognize all the harm such efforts have caused, not only to individuals, but to society as well.
