Profession - choose one for the money or for more freedom

People have sometimes asked my advice on their choice of a profession. They are hesitant: should they pursue a line of work that would earn them a good deal of money or should they choose a less lucrative career, which would leave them more time for other things? As an instructor, it is not up to me to tell them what they must do, but only to point out the consequences of their choice. After that it is up to them to decide. So this is what I reply, ‘There is nothing wrong in wanting to earn a lot of money. It all depends on what you want to achieve. If your ideal is what is commonly known as “to succeed in life”, in other words to have power and influence, well then, go and earn lots of money! But if your ideal is to progress on the path of the inner life, you will not need much money; you will need freedom and time for spiritual activities. So the choice is yours!’
