Love - do not be in a hurry to declare your love

When you love somebody, do not be in too much of a hurry to tell them. It is better that they should not know. It is your love that makes you happy, that stimulates you and gives meaning to your life,* and as the one you love is not perfect, if they know how you feel, there is a danger that without meaning to, they may ruin everything. They will think to themselves, ‘Ah, the door is open – let’s make the most of it!’ Yes, it is only natural. But later, when you feel that they do not understand you, you will suffer, you will be disappointed and your love will die. And that is a pity, for it is love that gives you wings. You must not sacrifice it for someone who may well destroy it. So love, but keep your love well hidden. There will be time enough to talk about it when you are both strong and fully prepared. In the meantime, say nothing. What matters is to go on loving. Never forget that it is your love that is important, more important than whom you love. You must never lose that love, for it is this that nourishes you and gives you your ardour, your zest for life, the will to overcome all obstacles.
