Exorcism - the problems it poses; an example from the Gospels

It is possible for a spiritual Master to drive out harmful entities that have taken hold of someone. If he considers it necessary, he will agree to do battle with the entities and put them to flight. The only problem is that when a being possessed by dark spirits is set free, the spirits immediately go in search of another home. The Gospels even give an example of this. When Jesus freed the man from Gerasa who was possessed by demons, they are said to have begged him ‘not to order them to go back into the abyss’. So Jesus made them enter a herd of swine that was there, whereupon the swine rushed into the sea and were drowned. So dark spirits can be driven out, but they will seek shelter elsewhere in other living beings. This is why the matter of exorcism requires very careful study.
