Efforts - they keep us strong and intelligent

Human beings have an innate tendency to avoid exerting themselves. They always try to get others – people, animals or machines – to do their work for them. In doing so, they weaken themselves and lose their own faculties. Those who want to be strong and intelligent, and capable of standing up to whatever comes should get into the habit of making an effort. It is possible today to acquire all kinds of things without exerting oneself at all, but what will this lead to? People will be outwardly satisfied and that is all; inwardly they will be empty, hollow. It is the efforts they make that keep humans alive and stalwart.*
