Commitment, spiritual - not expecting material advantages from it

When Jesus was brought before Pilate to be judged, Pilate asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’, and Jesus replied simply, ‘You say so.’ But he added, ‘My kingdom is not from this world’. For Jesus had no earthly ambitions. For him true kingship was heavenly kingship. Nor did he confuse human glory with divine glory, or worldly acquisitions with spiritual ones. This is already apparent in the episode where the Pharisees question him about the taxes due to Caesar. He simply replies, ‘Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.’ If you want to become a true disciple of Jesus, you too must try not to confuse earth with heaven. And, above all, beware of thinking that a spiritual commitment must bring you material advantages.
