Temptations - only the high ideal enables us to resist them

You would like to resist certain temptations because you sense that, if you fail to do so, you will be drawn into disastrous experiences. But often, despite your desire, you do not succeed in controlling yourself, and you succumb. Why? Because you have not developed within yourself a love for something more beautiful, something noble which could counter your instincts. It is this love within you that will take up the fight and enable you to succeed. Willpower alone is not enough for the struggle, because sooner or later it will capitulate. It is not sufficient to say: ‘I will not allow myself to be carried away, I will resist!' In order to resist what pulls you down, you must be helped by a force that projects you to a higher world: a high ideal.
