Spiritual life - begin modestly

Many embark on the spiritual life without assessing any of the difficulties involved and wanting to undertake great things straightaway. And that is bound to end in accidents or disappointments. If you try to jump over a great, wide precipice without any previous preparation, you will fall into it, and when you get up again - if you ever do get up - you will have received such a shock that, from that time, you will give up even trying to make the slightest effort. On the other hand, if you learn to jump across a ditch that's two feet wide, then one that's three feet, and so on, you will go far. Because, little by little, you will become stronger and more confident in yourself. It is the same with spiritual life. I have already given you so many methods! Saying a few words, making a particular gesture, mastering certain impulses... But you do not use these methods, because they seem too insignificant to you. And yet, little exercises like these can take you a long way, whereas grand ventures will destroy you. Just think how many people who have tried embarking on occult practices so as to become clairvoyants, magicians and so on have lost their mind.
