Fire and water - man and woman, the conditions for creating life

Fire and water* are expressions of the two principles, masculine and feminine, that work together in the universe. When a man and woman unite, they reproduce the union of fire and water, and if they do not know how to go about it, water – the woman – will evaporate, and fire – the man – will be extinguished. As fire and water can destroy each other, they are said to be enemies. On the face of it, it is true that men and women are perpetually in conflict, and yet, for some reason, they continue to seek each other out. What is that reason? It is that they represent the two great cosmic principles that together create life. However, if fire and water are truly to create life instead of destroying each other, they must not be in direct contact. The water must be poured into a container and placed over the fire. In this way, the fire will exalt the water, generating a substantial release of energy by means of which the two will set the whole world in motion.
