Purity - does not consist in guarding against love; quite the opposite

Purity does not consist in guarding against all contact, as if shut up in a jar. No, this kind of purity, which thinks only in terms of self-protection, is useless, even harmful. True purity is divine love, because divine love is life; it is the water that gushes from a spring, and this gushing repels everything that is dirty, dull and dark. Purity without love is not true purity. How many religious people have believed, and still do, that purity consists in guarding against love! They may be as white as snow, but they are also as cold as snow, and their purity is sterile. It is not love or contact with others that we must guard against but selfishness and possessiveness. The moment feelings such as these appear in us, we are no longer pure. True purity is the purity of crystal-clear gushing water, flowing on its way to water the fields and gardens in the hearts and souls of all beings.
