‘To know, to will, to dare, to keep silent’ - origin of this formula

We must never forget that reality manifests itself as two opposing aspects: there is the pure and the impure, darkness and light, good and evil. True knowledge encompasses both. That is why all real initiates must measure themselves against the powers of evil. It is not enough for them to know and work with good, they also explore evil, they ‘descend into hell’, those regions traditionally called the netherworld. They prepare themselves for a long time, and once properly armed, taking great precautions, they decide to face this netherworld and its inhabitants. Some bold spirits have sought to venture into these regions, but they were not yet up to the task. This is where the formula ‘to know, to will, to dare, to keep silent’ that initiates have passed down among themselves through the centuries takes on its full meaning. Once initiates have acquired the necessary knowledge, they have the will to act. They then dare to confront the powers of evil. And when they have claimed victory, they keep silent, because it is dangerous to speak of hell to humans who are not ready to hear of it: some might be frightened and others might embark on very risky experiments.
